Tough Guy Challenge

January 3rd, 2010
I am setting my first challenge - competing in the 2010 Tough Guy Challenge. This is a 8 mile obstacle course. It is not your typical monkey bars, sack race, spin around with your head on a bat then high step through tires, nooo sir! This is a full blown 4 alarm course. Everything challenging in the world is on this blasted course. Fire fields, electrical probes, freezing swim, mud, blood and beer! Everything that, if you finish , you will be classified as a Tough Guy. (Check out the links in the side bar) If I do finish, does this even count sense I am not doing this on American soil? There are a bunch of tough guys out there, there are plenty of wimps. Where do I fall in? I know my wife is a tough guy for battling Cancer twice and that my grandpas are tough guys for fighting in WWII and that my boss, head football coach of your MV Marauders is a tough guy for playing college football for IU at an elite level. but what do I have that could put me in with these folks? I do try and see how many grocery bags from the car I can carry in at once. I look like a burrow in a coffee commercial, but I feel powerful. "No honey, I can get it in one trip go kick up your feet and watch some TV." I know that does not make me tough though. I need something to classify me a tough guy. So I am using this trip to define me to tell the world (or just you all) I AM MAN, ME TOUGH!!!

I know what to do:
I consider myself a avid runner. When I am not training I try and log 5-15 miles a week. When I break- I break. The exercise I get is pizza curls and arm chair sit-ups. I am not a couch potato by any stretch. I am the guy who is always into something, just may not be burning fat:) My work is notorious for fatty treats. this devil woman at work brings in treats for everyone and I do nothing but dive in. I hate her - even though she is the sweetest woman. No more sweets from here on out...okay maybe I will just cut down.

How to get ready for this challenge? Well I have around 6 weeks to get ready. I am going to log 15-30 miles a week combined with circuit training. Pushups, pull-ups, core work, bear crawls and more. I do need to mention this training is all done outside. Lucky for me the coldest weather in forever has been here over the last month. I am going to push myself physically and mentally.
I fly out on January 28th across the great pond to England to participate in this Tough Guy Challenge. I need to get ready!
Until next post, jelly legs out!

Training is going well. Joel and I just ran the Fort. 1:15 minutes of  being lost. I ran the 20 minute trail covered in foot deep snow for over an hour trying to find my way back. It was getting late and dark. If I were only Bear Grylls I could get out! Bear Grylls is the Croc Hunter, Anthony Bourdane and MacGyver wrap in one bad ass wilderness dude. Watch Man vs Wild on Discovery sometime. Okay back to the being lost- Joel even got to the point he came in after me. I gave him the shake though because I ran to the back of the woods until I found a road and ran back to base. I had to call him to come back. Poor Joel. I did run next to a deer just eating snow covered grass and he never blinked, just looked at me. If I were him I would have darted because I am sure my breathing sounded like a bull in heat.

Joel and I ran the Fort again today. He took me to the middle of some trails that had steep inclines and we had to sprint them.....they were a 1/2 mile long (it seemed) after 4 rounds we ran back. A steady and great hour long workout. Did I mention I hate Joel? Well I do.

Well I started really training about 6 weeks ago. Pushups, pull-ups, core work, bear crawls and more. I do need to mention this training is all done outside. Lucky for me the coldest weather in forever has been here over the last month. I am trying to push myself physically and mentally. I can live with pain during workouts but only if your mind is right. I know if I am doing it right when right after I walk in the door after a grueling work out my wife says, "you look like your dying!" Although looking like death is normally not the Robert Redford compliment you are looking for, I get a good feeling because it means I tried hard. You never realize what you can't do until you give up. Even then you are left with a challenge it is just whether or not you act on that challenge.

All Packed and ready to go. My Backpack looks like it is going to pop with all my crap. I am off to run in honor of my G'pa's who fought in WWII. I am very proud to have those tough guys in my life. We all own them a great debt. USA!!  The theme of Tough Guy Challenge is WW I and WWII. So we will run to honor them on Sunday.
Joel should be picking me up soon and I am ready to hit the road. I am going to miss Ang something awful. We are sewn at the hip - I love that girl. She and the cats will be fin though because they have tons of visitors scheduled. Well I am off - look for some updates on my trip.
